Hatching Pets

Just before Pets dropped, DFK released a guide on how to hatch your pets here. It included some great information, but didn’t cover everything. I’ve taken information from that and added some more to help you with your decision making on Pets.

How to Hatch Pets

So you’ve got yourself an Egg, eh? Congratulations! That’s the most important part of hatching pets! Let’s get you to the Hatchery.

Hatchery Menu with Jarek who’s no longer stood in the Marketplace (which has been superseded)

First you go click ‘Incubate Eggs’ and you’re presented with this menu:

Click ‘Select Egg To Incubate’ (duh) and then pick from the eggs you’ve got to bring up the options for that egg. At the point of launch, only the Grey and Blue Eggs were available to be hatched, followed by Green and Yellow at a later date with Gold to be the last colour.

After that, you have to pick whether you want Gaia’s Favor, Gaia’s Grace or Gaia’s Boon. There are various costs involved in that, and to skip to the costs section click here. Essentially, the more you pay, the better your chances of getting a decent pet.

Gaia’s Pity

For your first hatch (of each egg colour) there are some contracts to approve, then the time it then takes for your egg to hatch will depend on which of Gaia’s Blessings you selected. You can then check the Hatchery to check progress on your Eggs to see how long they’re going to take to finish incubation.

Once the countdown has finished, you’ll be able to click ‘Hatch Pet Egg’ and see what wonderful creature pops out at you.

Congratulations on your
brand new floor pet

Cost of Hatching Pets

The costs of hatching pets aren’t as complex as some suspected, but they certainly scale upward in cost to court a more favourable Gaia’s Blessing.

The three options for hatching all have different costs and bonuses attached to them. They can be broken down as follows:

Gaia’s Favor Cost

Gaia’s Favor is the cheapest way to hatch a pet. But, it takes 168 hours (1 whole week!) for the egg to finish incubating. There’s only a 1% shiny chance, but most people won’t care about that as it doesn’t affect utility.

Common = 60% (3/5), UC or above = 40% (2/5), Rare = 12.5% (1/7), Leg/Myth = 2.2% (1/50)

In resources, this costs just 1 Jewel, 50 Gold and 200 Gaia’s Tear. Only the cost of Jewel and Gold changes between levels of Gaia’s Blessing.

Gaia’s Grace Cost

Gaia’s Grace is the middle option. It takes 24 hoursfor the egg to finish incubating. And there’s a 10% shiny chance too but again this offers no utility anyway.

Grace = 10x cost from Favor Common = 50%, UC or above = 50%, Rare = 15% (1/8), Leg/Myth = 5% (1/20)

Grace = 2x chance at a Leg/Myth for 10x cost.

In resources, this costs 10 Jewel, 500 Gold and 200 Gaia’s Tear. Only the cost of Jewel and Gold changes between levels of Gaia’s Blessing.

Gaia’s Boon Cost

Gaia’s Boon is the most expensive option but not very economical. Yeah, you get your pet “instantly” (or, 20 seconds later) but you’re paying 5 times the amount you would for Gaia’s Grace and your odds of getting a decent card (rare+) are less than twice as good. The chance of shiny is 100%, though.

Boon = 50x cost from favor or 5x cost from Grace Common = 33% (1/3), UC = 33% (1/3) Rare or above = 33% (1/3), Rare = 20% (1/5), Leg/Myth = 8% (1/12)

Boon = 4x chance at a Leg/Myth for 50x cost from Favor or a 1.5x chance at a Leg/Myth for 5x cost from Grace.

In resources, this costs 50 Jewel, 5000 Gold and 200 Gaia’s Tear. Only the cost of Jewel and Gold changes between levels of Gaia’s Blessing.

Egg Colour Costs

In addition to paying for Gaia’s Blessing, you also have specific costs for specific colours of eggs. These don’t change in quantity when picking between Gaia’s Blessings.

Conclusion

It can be pretty expensive to buy eggs from the trader and then pay again to hatch them at the Hatchery. If you find eggs organically through questing then you can potentially be more liberal with your Gaia’s Blessing choice, but it isn’t a case of “most expensive equals best”. Imagine paying 50J for an egg in the Trader, 50J (plus extra) to hatch it and ending up with a floor pet worth 36J (the floor price for pets with single common bonuses at time of launch). As ever, you have to weigh these things up for yourself but don’t feel pressured into going for Gaia’s Boon just because it has the best chances of an awesome pet.
